The Dilemma of the Expatriate Parent

 When moving to a new country, should I:

  • tutor my children after school so they will keep up with their peers and be able to re-enter their school when we return home, or

  • give my children the time after school to settle in and experience the social life, customs and culture of their new environment?

    Is balance ever possible? Keeping up basic skills but not teaching the entire curriculum, using summer holidays or the six months before repatriation to prepare for the return home?

    What is the point of a move overseas if children don’t get to experience a new culture?
